You usually start with a basic substrate such as coconut fiber. This is where the worms first start to get used to it. After a few days you can put your first organic waste into the composter. We recommend covering each layer of food with newspaper, our compostable paper flakes or our worm blanket . This prevents the compost from drying out, binds moisture and odors and prevents unwanted insects such as fruit flies from settling in it.
The way it works is very simple: the worms only ever live in the top 20cm layer where there is fresh food. You add fresh food there regularly, every few days. The composted material that has been broken down by the worms and microorganisms automatically moves further down. This means you can remove the humus directly from the bottom opening without digging, lifting or sifting.
