The Frankfurt am Main-based association NG International eV built an aquaponics facility in Muhanga/Rwanda at the beginning of 2022. Rwanda, the "land of 1000 hills", is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa. The average annual income is €660 per year.
The plant produces 12 tonnes of fish per year (mainly tilapia and African catfish). The food produced is used to feed the students at the Muhanga Hope School. The plant is looked after by the students' parents. The surplus food sold on the local market also secures the income of these families. Due to the favorable local conditions - there is no need for greenhouses and interventions in temperature control - the development of a smaller version of the plant is now being pushed forward, with a capacity of 2 tonnes of fish per year.
Due to the lower capital investment, this will be an interesting source of income for broader sections of the population. Mr. Saurer accompanied us and our partners in Rwanda on this project as an important advisor on all questions of technical implementation. We thank him for the many technical impulses that have continually helped our project to progress, and we would be very pleased to continue working with him.
