Fast reproduction | Reduces algae formation | Natural food plant for your fish
Duckweed is an excellent vegetarian alternative to feed your fish such as tilapia or carp in aquaponics. It also serves to shade your tanks , reduces the formation of algae and offers your fish good hiding places .
These aquatic plants - just like your vegetable plants - remove organic pollutants such as nitrate and phosphate from the water and thus have a positive influence on the water quality .
With this aquaponics duckweed starter pack (approx. 100g) you can easily continue to propagate yourself . Under optimal conditions the stock doubles almost daily. This way you always have a plant-based food alternative for your fish.
If you want to intensively cultivate duckweed, we recommend setting up a separate tank with little current. For example, a grow bed with reduced water flow and using the standpipe as an overflow. In this case, you can put the siphon bell aside.
Characteristics
- Scientific name: Lemna minor
- Optimum temperature: 5-35°C
- Growth form: small, flat, light green to medium green leaves that float on the water surface, usually with small side leaves, fine light root threads under water
- Propagation by division. This also means that once you have duckweed in your tank, you won't be able to get rid of it so quickly. However, you can easily reduce the population with fish such as tilapia, cichlids, carp or goldfish, as these fish use the plants as food.
